Glossary

311 - or 3-1-1 is a telephone number you can dial to get non-emergency assistance. There is an online 3-1-1 city website where you can enter your request and get a tracking case number. 311 is useful to cite traffic hazzards, down trees, trash in the alley, parking signs missing, graffiti cleanup, vandalism, etc. Be sure to get a case number. If calling by phone be sure to get a city contact name for followup purposes.

911 - or 9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number.

Buddies, Inc. - Sponsor for the Explorers Scouts Program to help neighborhood youths.

BCPD - Balitimore City Police Department

COP - Citizens on Patrol. Neighborhood group that walks the streets to locate problems in the community from crime, illegal activity, graffiti, missing signs, hazards to citizens, liter, etc. Ask at the next SBNA meeting when the next COP walk will take place. Walk schedules are not advertised so you must ask a neighbor or city official.

mySobo.org - abbreviation for my south baltimore where .org is organization. The SBNA does not use the dot com extension. The ".com" is used for commerical websites.

O's - short for Orioles Baseball. Also abbreviated Os. Oriole fans replace the "Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light," with "OOO, say can you see, by the dawn's early light," during the National Anthem at Camden Yards and other events.

SBNA - South Baltimore Neighborhood Association. A group of residents who volunteer there time to make SoBo a better community.  See SBIC.

SBIC - South Baltimore Improvement Committee, SBNA is registered with Baltimore City Government as SBIC,a non-profit organization. This name is used interchangeably with SBNA when talking with SoBo residents.

SoBo - short for South Baltimore.   SoBo is also used as an umbrella term for many neighborhoods in South Baltimore. Similar to the way New York, NY is an catch all term for NY's many boroughs.   SoBo is a broad term but can be used in general to refer to our neighborhood.

SoWeBo - short for South West Baltimore.

West Federal Hill -  Another name for our community, especially useful when talking with people from the county.  Resident will use West Federal Hill, SBNA, and SBIC interchangeably.   Most city websites refer to our neighborhood as SBIC/West Federal Hill.
