WEEKLY TRASH

Weekly trash is defined as trash that is NOT bulk trash (sofas, wood, doors, etc.) and NOT hazardous chemicals and NOT recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastics).

Trash pickup is wednesday morning and saturday morning in SBNA. The exact time depends where you live in SBNA. Depending on the situation and if the city is patrolling, you could get fined if you do not handle your trash properly.

STARTING JULY 13th:

SIMPLY CLICK ON "NEW TRASH DAYS" AND PUT IN YOUR ADDRESS...(courtesy WFH Blog)

- FINE WARNING: Put your trash out after 8pm the night before pickup, otherwise you could get fined.

- FINE WARNING: Trash is to be put in a can with a lid. Loose bags feed rats. This is moderately enforced but nontheless, it is enforced. The property will get fined.

- FINE WARNING: Please clean up after pickup. If you put your trash on someone else property, please clean up if there is any residual trash laying around. The city will only take bags, they do not sweep up after the rats have torn apart a bag. However the residence of the location could be find if the city is patrolling.

- Mercury Flourescents bulbs and Lithium Batteries should not be thrown in the trash. These items have procedures for safe handling. See http://www.cleanergreenerbaltimore.com/recycle/FAQ_Over.aspx

BULK TRASH

- Your address in SoBo is entitled to one bulk trash pickup per year. You must inquire with the city and schedule it or call 311. Be sure to use this pickup wisely. Refuge Management will take large items such as tires, mattresses, old couches, old furniture, appliances etc. Please verify with the city before putting your bulk items out on the street or alley. Please call 311 to schedule a bulk pickup or schedule it online.

- You can drop off bulk items at Quarantine Rd. Landfill (I695 & exit 2) near Hawkings Point or at Western Sanitation Yard at Cherry Hill. Cherry Hill is a trash handling yard not a landfill so they have containers for you to put your bulk trash in. All Drop off locations require a city driver's license. See your "20xx Baltimore City Department of Public Works Calendar", page 7 for the eight dropoff locations and time of operation.

Two closest SBNA bulk drop off locations:

Quarantine Rd. Sanitary Landfill - Convenient Citizen Drop-off, 6100 Quarantine Road, 410-396-3772 Mon-Sat. 9am-5pm (Citizen Drop Off)

Western Sanitation Yard, 701 Reedbird Avenue, 410-396-3367, Mon.-Sat., 9am-5pm (fall/winter) and 9am-7pm (summer/spring).

- SBNA has cleanup occasionally where we get a dumpster for the morning on a saturday. SBNA picks a corner to put the dumpster at. SBNA cleanups are typically at this time. SBNA cleans up typically once a month. SBNA either schedules a dumpster or we put the trash in bags and the city will patrol the neighborhood and pickup the trash bags.

HAZARDOUS WASTE TRASH

Some examples of hazardous waste is paints, chemicals, cleaning solvents.

- Each year towards fall, Baltimore Poly Tech has chemical and paint drop off. See your "20xx Baltimore City Department of Public Works Calendar". Baltimore Poly Tech High School is a short drive up I83.

- FINE WARNING: Do not put any chemical, paint or trash in the sewer drains, this only pollutes the Cheaspeake Bay and requires someone else to clean up after you.

20xx - Household Hazardous Waste Days:

Spring Clean-Out: Saturday, April 30th & Sunday, May 1st (time for drop-off: 11am-3pm)

Fall Clean-Out: Saturday-Sunday, October 29th – 30th (time for drop-off: 11am-3pm)

There is only one Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Location in the city on these dates:

Baltimore Polytechnic Institute

1400 West Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore 21209

NOTICE: typically residents store your items till the Annual Hazardous Waste day. If you can not wait because you are moving, please contact 311 on how to dispose of your hazardous waste.

RECYCLEABLE TRASH

- Note: not all trash is recyclable, the city has rules. Typically the city can not recycle plasics with food debris on it, so that is trash. The city makes money off recycling so this helps reduce taxes. Some plastics have

- SoBo is in the City Recycling Zone 4. The "20xx Baltimore City Department of Public Works Calendar" (DPW) has the dates of pickup in green lettering on the calender months. Pickups are typically every other friday unless there is a holiday, so the calendar comes in handy to verify recycling dates.

- You can buy a recycling container (yellow city container) or you can buy a container and mark it "recycle". Recycling goes out 8pm the night before. SBNA was selling recycle bins and cans, feel free to ask at the next SBNA monthly meeting. Or try this link: www.CleanerGreenerBaltimore.com

- Please order your "20xx Baltimore City Department of Public Works Calendar". The city mails a city calendar yearly to each city address, if you recently moved into the neighborhood or for some reason did not get your yearly calendar, you can order your own free copy to be mailed to you.

Recycling is mandated by law in Maryland

While the city currently does not have enforcement of recycling, many cities are going towards mandatory recycling to cut down on the expense of garbage disposal. Let’s do our part and work towards bettering our community and environment on our own!

Looking to Recycle other items? Look no further than the Earth 911 site!

(click link to learn specifics)

Earth 911 will help you recycle everything from computer equipment to household hazardous waste (household cleaners, paint & painting stuff, pool chemicals, tires, etc) to used motor oil.

Pouring hazardous waste, such as engine oil and radiator fluid, down the drain or throwing it in the garbage causes serious harm to the environment and your water supply.

Recycle Building Supplies:

  • The Loading Dock (donate excess/lightly used housing materials or purchase new or lightly used materials to do improvements to your home)

  • Second Chance (5 large warehouses below M&T Stadium) Awesome place to donate or buy.

Special Environmental & Recycling Calendar Events:

Earth Day (http://earthday.org/) – Every year – April 22nd

ELECTRONICS DONATIONS

- Each year BGE will send you a flyer with dates to drop off electronics such as old TVs, computers, etc. to help support local boy/girl scout troops and religious organizations who take these items. They make a small profit on recycling. Look for this flyer in early April.

CHARITY DONATIONS

- The Goodwill Store, accepts donations. They are located in the Southside Shopping Plaza next to Shoppers.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUPS

- Volunteer at a monthly SBNA's cleanup event(s) during the spring, summer, and fall. We need your help. SBNA cleanups normally start at 9am and finishes at noon. Some members start at 7am. SBNA will target a street or an area. SBNA provides shovels and brooms, and sometimes gloves. SBNA usually provides free coffee. Some months the city will provide a dumpster.

- If a dumpster is available, this is a good time to get rid of some bulk trash (non-hazardous material).

- SBNA participates every year in the Annual Spring Citywide Cleanup Day. SBNA reserves a city dumpster for that day.
