This year’s Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Wine & Art Festival will be bigger and better than ever! Come on down on Sunday, June 3, 11 am to 7 pm, for this fun and FREE event that everyone looks forward too as a kick-off for summer. It all takes place on South Charles, between Hamburg and West, and on Cross Street on both sides of Cross Street Market.

This festival is known for its great music, and this year is no exception. We’re excited to have two hot New Orleans acts, Honey Island Swamp Band and Water “Wolfman” Washington, along with a good mix of local bands, including Cris Jacobs Band, The Players, Ruben Montoya, Dawgone, Community Groove, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and more.

Be sure to stop by Artist Alley on Cross Street to see works by local artists, including renowned painter Jessica Damen of Federal Hill and local gallery owner Mark Cottman. Arts & crafts vendors will offer a variety of wares, including jewelry, hats, purses, and t-shirts within the festival. And, of course, lots of great food & drink. Wine tastings of several different varietals will add to the festivities.

Kids’ Kross Street will feature the usual moonbounces, toddler play area, crafts, and face painting, staffed by community parent volunteers. This year, Towson Athletics will be on site with an obstacle course, football toss, and more for the kids. Waterfront Partnership will be contributing fun water-themed games. We’re planning on a couple of performers and dancers, too, so stay tuned!

Don’t miss this popular Federal Hill street festival and celebration of city life!

This year’s show has a distinct local flavor as Frederick natives The Carousel Rogues bring the critical buzz of their new self-titled album to the bill along with Baltimore favorites ellen cherry and Sandy Asirvatham. Once again MammoJam continues the tradition of presenting the best talent from New Orleans as we welcome extraordinary vibraphonist Mike Dillon (Garage A Tois, Les Claypool) and his energetic band of newcomers, Yojimbo, in support of area breast cancer awareness, detection, and treatment programs.

The festival will be preceded by the 2nd Annual “JugJog” 5k Fun Run beginning at 8:00 am at Mother’s Federal Hill Grille. Festival tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door and can be purchased at the 8×10 or at www.mammojam.org. “This year’s lineup exemplifies how our local artists can really make an impact on our community,” said Bill Romani, founder of MammoJam. “Each year our friends in the music industry and our dedicated volunteers reach to new levels in support the women and families touched by breast cancer.”

MammoJam is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting breast cancer screening and treatment programs for underinsured and low income women. Since October, 2003, all of MammoJam’s proceeds have provided annual support to local organizations like the Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Medical Center and Harbor Hospital’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Center in their fight against breast cancer. MammoJam provides annual funding to support a community outreach-translator at Harbor Hospital that has brought breast cancer screening and treatment to over 300 Hispanic women since 2010.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx remind citizens that Baltimore City’s Household Hazardous Waste monthly collection events will start this month at the Northwest Citizen Convenience Center located at 2840 Sisson Street.

These events provide an opportunity for Baltimore City residents ONLY to dispose of hazardous household materials such as oil-based paints, pesticides, herbicides, car and household batteries, drain cleaners, gasoline, pool chemicals and many other items. (Latex paint is NOT hazardous waste; it can be dried up and the cans put out for regular trash collection.) Businesses and private haulers must contract with a certified vendor to dispose of hazardous waste.

Residents must show proof of city residency, e.g. a driver’s license, telephone bill or tax bill, before they can drop off any hazardous items. Residents must also be able to identify the material. Materials that will not be collected as household hazardous waste include trash, asbestos, ammunition, fire extinguishers, industrial and medical wastes, and radioactive materials, including smoke alarms with a radioactive symbol.

Residents can take these items to the Northwest Citizen Convenience Center on the last Friday and Saturday of every month from April through November.

April 27 & 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

May 25 & 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

June 29 & 30 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
